Here you can find different ways of installing Spotify for Linux. Spotify for Linux is a labor of love from our engineers that wanted to listen to Spotify on their Linux development machines. They work on it in their spare time and it is currently not a platform that we actively support. The experience may differ from our other Spotify Desktop clients, such as Windows and Mac. You can tell us what you think and ask other users for help at theDesktop (Linux) boardin The Spotify Community forum.
Install on Ubuntu
Go to Spotify in Ubuntu Software and click install. If the link doesn’t work, open Ubuntu Software and search for Spotify.
An easy workaround is for people to share the spotify URI and not the URL. Then you instruct your browser to allow redirections for anything starting with 'spotify:' to Spofity Desktop. Try to open the Spotify URI for any music in your browser and it should ask what to do with it.
Install via command line
Snap
If you don’t have access or don’t want to use Ubuntu Software, it is possible to install Spotify from the command line with snap. Run the following command in your terminal:
- Create a Spotify password so you can log in with your email address instead. In our password reset form, enter the email address on your Facebook. Check your inbox for an email from us to reset your password.
- Spotify comes with a bunch of keyboard shortcuts to make your life easier. Here are some of my favorites: Ctrl-Right to go to the next track. Ctrl-Alt-Enter to go to the artist of the selected row. Ctrl-L to start typing in the search bar. For more check out Spotify’s help page. Spotify is a powerful music listening to application.
- So, it seems the Spotify didn't solved it, but I've found a Chrome extension called 'Open in Spotify desktop client' and it solved my problem. If you don't get the expected behaviour straight away on a Mac after you install the extension, you might type at the adress bar 'spotify:' and hit enter, it will ask to open spotify links on the client.
- Right-click a playlist on the left sidebar. Click and check Collaborative Playlist. Right-click the playlist. Hover over Share to see sharing options. Right-click a song or album. Hover over Add to Playlist. Select the collaborative playlist.
If you run another Linux distribution than Ubuntu, first seehttps://snapcraft.io/ for how to install snap, then run the command above.

Debian / Ubuntu
Spotify for Linux is also released as a Debian package. Our aim is that it should work with the latest Long Term Support release of Ubuntu, but we will try to make it work for other releases of Ubuntu and Debian as well.
You will first need to configure our debian repository:
